[13] Talked with County Emergency Manager on 10-9-2018. He noted that all deaths were supposed to be reported to the state from the County Emergency Operations Center, where no deaths had been reported to the State. Noted that the Moped fatality was well before the hurricane hit and appeared to be an un-related traffic accident. He had seen reports of another death, but the event in question turned out to be a homicide unrelated to the storm. He noted the deaths of two nursing home residents, but these natural deaths also appeared to be unrelated to the storm. Also noted a cardiac arrest death in a residence but was unsure if EMS was delayed in responded to 911 call by storm water or debris on roads. Suggested I call the EMS Chief, which I did. He recalled the case, and noted that responders experienced no delay in responding and that he did not consider this to be a Florence-related death. His opinion was that there were no Columbus County Hurricane Florence-related fatalities. Nonetheless, in that the Governor’s Office is cited as indicating that the Moped accident was of an evacuee, and in that (as of Oct 9, the NC DPS still notes one Columbus County death, we choose to show one, though it is in dispute by local officials.
