Narrative Information

 

Alchem Incorporated:C B Lockwood: Wooden steamer of 293 ft sank on 10/13/1902 13 1/2 miles North by Northwest of Fairport Harbor, Ohio. The lives of ten of the 19 persons on board were lost in the wreck. Nine including the Captain and his wife were rescued after 12 hours in a small yawl. The larger lifeboat carrying ten crewmen became separated from the yawl and washed up empty on shore days later.”  (Alchem Incorporated.  Erie-Ashtabula Shipwrecks.)

 

U.S. Steamboat-Inspection Service: “Steamer C.B. Lockwood, of Fairport, Ohio, 2,323 gross tons, while on Lake Erie, 13 miles north-northwest from Fairport, had her steam pipe broken.  She lowered anchor and shortly sprung a leak and foundered. The wind was blowing about 40 miles an hour and a heavy sea running.  The 2 lifeboats were safely launched with all the crew on board. One boat was picked up all right by a passing steamer, the other was found next day bottom side up and occupants drowned. The lost were: Chief engineer, second engineer, third officer, 1 oiler, 3 firemen, and 3 deck hands…” (U.S. Steamboat-Inspection Service. Annual Report 1903, p. 74.)
