Narrative Information
May 29, OK: “Seven Known Dead and Others Missing. Property Damage Enormous. Others in Rural Section May Be Dead. Swoops Down With Crash…Doctors and Nurses Rushed to Scene…
“Wetumka, Okla, May 29 – (Special) – Seven are known to be dead, two or thee others are missing and believed to be buried under the debris about 50 others more or less seriously injured as the result of a tornado which swept the south portion of this town Thursday afternoon at 5:35. It struck the ground at the southwest edge of the town and swept everything before it in a path a block and a half in width, wrecking about 30 residences, several automobiles and killing a number of livestock.
“Those who escaped at one began the work of rescue. The National Guards were called out and with the American Legion and other citizens spent the entire night searching the ruins for victims, living and dead, and giving all possible assistance to all. This morning it was thought that at least two or three more bodies would be recovered when the work of moving the wreckage would be pushed farther….
Dead
- Y. Armstrong, wife and child.
- L. Ramsey of the American National Bank.
Mr. and Mrs. Woodruff.

May 30, OK: “Muskogee. – (AP) – Two persons were killed and a score injured, three seriously in a tornado which struck Warner, 18 miles south of here about 6:30 o’clock last night. Those killed and the most seriously injured were in the Greenway hotel when the storm struck. Virtually all the business section was destroyed and damage will approximate $100,000. Reports that Stigler had been struck by the twister were unfounded. A high rain and heavy wind caused property damage. There were no casualties.” (Daily Ardmoreite, OK. “Two Dead at Warner.” 5-29-1924, p. 1.
May 30, OK: “Tornado Wipes Out J. M. Breace Farm Household. A raging tornado struck a path one mile wide just southeast of Muldrow about seven o’clock Wednesday evening and claimed three lives and demolished a number of farm houses. J. M. Breace and two of his children were instantly killed with the tornado demolished his home three miles southwest of Muldrow and injured another.
“The storm suddenly dropped on the community just like a bolt of lightning from the sky and swept everything in its path. The twister was about a mile wide, taking with it barns, farm houses, fence posts, telephone posts and livestock…” (Sequoyah County Democrat, OK. “Father and Two Children Cyclone Victims Near Muldrow!” 5-30-1924, p. 1.)
May 29, AR: “Mrs. Elmer Carlton Killed As Plank Is Driven Through Her Body; Property Loss Heavy….She leaves her husband and four children. The house in which they were living was razed.
“Six other houses in that neighborhood were blown down and one was struck by lightning and burned to the ground….
“Cyclones sweeping through Northwest Arkansas Wednesday night cost the life of one woman, wounded some 10 people, wrought heavy property damage and left parts of the fruit section practically demoralized. Wires are down, communications broken and train service delayed….
“A small cyclone hit Summers about an hour before the Farmington disaster and practically wiped out that town, without fatalities, however. The Funkhouser store, Masonite Hall and six houses were demolished. The pump station of the Fayetteville waster plant one and a half miles east of Fayetteville was reached by one of the smaller cyclones and a frame building smashed, a half of the water station building whirled away and several of the giant trees on the grounds torn up by the roots. The river is clogged with logs and limbs and with the heavy overflow caused by the near-cloudbursts following the cyclone, the situation at the dam and pump station is serious….” (Fayetteville Daily Democrat, AR. “Cyclones Sweep Through Washington County; 1 Dead.” 5-29-1924, p. 1.
