Narrative Information
April 17: “Two persons are dead, several injured and thousands of dollars’ worth of property damage as a result of the heavy wind and rain storm which struck Indiana early today. Houses were blown down, trees uprooted, a train derailed and several branches of the railroads were forced to suspend operation because of the weakened condition of track, washouts and bridges being washed away.
“James Hasty, 67 years old, a farmer near Williamsport [Warren County], was killed when the house in which he was sleeping collapsed and Philip Meehan, 6 years old, was drowned when the boat in which he was riding capsized.
“The South Bend division of the Pennsylvania railroad had to suspend operation because the bridge over Eel river was washed away and the Danville division of the Wabash railroad suspended operation because of the weakened condition of the track. Passenger trains No. 43 of the Big Four railroad was derailed near Foster, Ind., when it ran into a washout there….
_______
“Chicago, April 17. – Storms and floods, unequaled in the last half century, swept Illinois and Indiana today causing huge property loss and devastating villages and farms. A cyclone during the night killed one at Irvington, Ill., a village of 250 in the Illinois Coal mining regions. Ten were injured. Nearly every building in the village was demolished by the storm, according to reports brought out by trainmen. The Illinois river reached the highest stage in 50 years, flooding nearly 200,000 acres of fertile farm lands and causing intense suffering among families driven from their homes. Indiana rivers, running bank full, were swollen by a cloudburst over the central part of the state today.” (Wabash Plain Dealer, IN. “Storm Sweeps the County. Two Are Dead in Wake of Indiana Storm.” 4-17-1922, p. 1.)
April 18: “(By The Associated Press.)
“Indianapolis, April 17. – Twenty-one persons met death and more than 100 were seriously injured in a series of wind and electrical storms which passed over Indiana today. Property damage was estimated at more than $1,000,000. Communication means are meager tonight, railways and highways are flooded and it is believed that the death and property damage may be higher when more complete reports are available. Heavy rains continued in all parts of the state today and in more than a dozen instances high winds developed into tornadoes, leaving death and ruin in their wake.
“Relief was being rushed to stricken districts tonight. Most of the damage was in rural districts. Barns, trees, silos and homes fell before heavy winds and hundreds of acres of wheat are damaged by high water. There was scarcely a single Indiana stream that was within its banks tonight. Flood stages equaling the high marks of 1913 were reported from several points.
“Two districts were struck by tornadoes. In southern Indiana there was no loss of life. North of Indianapolis, however, from Danville, Ill., to Summerville, Ind., two distinct tornado series caused a heavy loss of life. Reports of Indiana dead reaching here tonight were as follows.
Hedrick (Warren county) eight.
Williamsport (Warren county) four.
Sloan (Warren county) two.
Jasper county, one.
Alexandria (Madison county) three.
Orestes (Madison county) one.
One drowning at Noblesville. [Hamilton County]
One drowning at Hammond. [Lake County]
_______
“Danville, Ill., April 17. – Seven dead and many persons injured was the toll of a tornado that swept across Vermillion county, Ill., and Warren county, Ind., late today. Property damage is reported heavy at Hedrick, Ind., and vicinity, where six persons were killed, according to local reports. They are: Grover Johnson, William Grady, Miss Mildred Grady, Mrs. Philip High, Nellie Kurts and a woman named Morrisey. The last two named live on farms near Hedrick. All stores an elevator, a school house and several residents in Hedrick were reported destroyed. Mrs. Albert Anderson was killed and her husband seriously injured when their home was destroyed near Fithian, Ill. At Bismarck, Ill., many small buildings were blown down.
“Relief workers from Centralia and surrounding towns were at Irvington tonight caring for homeless and injured persons following a tornado which early today caused four deaths and injured about 40 other persons. Property damage is estimated at about $200,000 in Irvington, of about 100 homes and business houses.
“The tornado cut a path through three counties…” (Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette, IN. “21 Reported Dead in Tornado.” 4-18-1922, p. 1.
April 18, UP: “By United Press.
“Chicago, April 18 – Fifty killed and hundreds injured was the toll today of cyclones that swept the middle west. Tornadoes cut a swath through the flood stricken Mississippi valley. Indiana and Illinois were the hardest hit.
….
“Winds added to the havoc already caused by overflow of dozens of rivers and streams in Indiana and Illinois. Inhabitants of scores of towns were left shelterless when their tents, erected on high ground after homes had been swept down the course of rivers, were blown away….”
