Narrative Information

Jan 2: “Indianapolis — Bitterly cold temperatures gripped much of the nation on Tuesday [Jan 2], testing the mettle of even winter-wise northerners and delivering a shock to those accustomed to far milder weather in the South. The cold has been blamed for at least a dozen deaths, prompted officials to open warming centers in the Deep South and triggering pleas from government officials to check on neighbors, especially those who are elderly, sick or who live alone….

“The National Weather Service issued wind chill advisories and freeze warnings covering a vast area, from South Texas to Canada and from Montana through Maine….

“Indianapolis Public Schools canceled classes after the city tied a record low for the day — set in 1887 — of minus 12 degrees (-24 Celsius). The northwest Indiana city of Lafayette got down to minus 19 (-28 Celsius), shattering the previous record set in 1979….

“The cold has been blamed in at least 12 deaths in the past week. Police in St. Louis said a 54-year-old homeless man found dead in a trash bin Monday evening [Jan 1] apparently froze to death as the temperature dropped to negative 6 degrees (-21 Celsius). Two other suspected cold-related deaths occurred in Wisconsin: a 27-year-old woman’s body was found Monday evening on the shore of Lake Winnebago, and a 57-year-old man was found dead Sunday in a parking structure in Madison.

“With Chicago-area wind chills expected as low as negative 35 degrees (-37 Celsius), forecasters warned of frost bite and hypothermia risks. They urged residents to take precautions, including dressing in layers, wearing a hat and gloves, covering exposed skin and bringing pets indoors….

“Atlanta hospitals were seeing a surge in emergency room visits for hypothermia and other ailments as temperatures plunged below freezing. The temperature in Atlanta fell to 13 degrees (-11 Celsius) before dawn Tuesday….

“Warming shelters opened amid freeze watches and warnings in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama….” (Associated Press/Tammy Webber. “Bitter cold tests winter-wise, delivers shock to South.” Washington Post, 1-2-2018.)

Jan 3:  “Savannah, GA. (AP)…. The number of deaths linked to the relentless cold across much of the United States has risen to at least 16….

“In Mississippi, 45-year-old Kerry Merritt of Plantersville died Tuesday morning at a Tupelo hospital after being found unresponsive on her porch.

“In Michigan, a 96-year-old woman died after apparently wandering away from her suburban Detroit home and being overcome by the cold.

“The Texas, Mississippi and Michigan deaths come on top of at least a dozen others reported earlier….” (AP. “The Latest: At least 16 dead as brutal cold keeps grip on US.” 1-3-2018.)

Jan 4: “The death toll attributed to the potentially record breaking cold in the eastern United States has risen to at least 17 people as of Thursday morning [Jan 4]. The arctic blast that has gripped most of the country at the start of this new year has created safety concerns, forcing schools and local attractions to close down until further notice, officials report. This cold has turned into a system now known as Winter Storm Grayson, which is expected to deliver snow, ice and high winds followed by possible record-breaking cold as it moves up the Eastern Seaboard from the Carolinas to Maine….” (Weather Channel (Pam Wright). “Frigid Cold Causes at Least 17 Deaths Across U.S.” 1-2-2018.)

Jan 5: “….CBS News has confirmed that at least 19 people nationwide have died from the blast of winter weather and accompanying cold temperatures….” (CBS/AP. “Brutal cold follows massive winter storm on much of East Coast.” 1-5-2018.)
