Narrative Information

Minshew: “July 18, 1984, San Ysidro, California.  At a McDonald’s restaurant in San Ysidro, Calif., 40 people were shot, 21 fatally[1] and 19 wounded, by James Oliver Huberty.”  (Minshew, Charles. “Interactive timeline: The worst mass shootings in U.S. history.” Denver Post, 7-20-2012.)

AP/Adler: “San Ysidro — A heavily armed gunman, fired as a security guard last week, turned a McDonald’s restaurant into a ‘slaughterhouse’ Wednesday [July 18], killing 20 people[2] and wounding 17 before he was fatally shot by a police officer. The 90-minute rampage was believed to be the worst single-day slaughter by one man in U.S. history.

“ ‘I’ve killed thousands, and I’ll kill thousands more,’…a survivor quoted the killer as saying….

“All told, hospitals reported 20 victims, aged 6 months to 60, who were treated after the massacre, including three whose injuries were not caused by gunfire. Four victims were listed in critical condition Wednesday night.

“The gunman was identified as James Oliver Huberty, 41, who once lived in an apartment about 200 yards from the restaurant.

“Huberty was killed by a shot fired by SWAT team sharpshooter…who was on the roof of a nearby post office….Police fired a total of five shots at the gunman…hitting no one but Huberty….” (Associated Press (Alan Adler). “21 dead in McDonald’s massacre.” The Register, Orange County, CA, p. 1.)
