Ludlum: “…an infant in its mother’s arms was killed by hail at Fort Collins, Colorado, on 30 July 1979 (Ludlum 1982, 153).”

Aug 8: “Fort Collins, Colo. (AP) — Jolene Kappelman, 3 months, who suffered head injuries during a 20-minute hailstorm here July 30, has died of her injuries, a Poudre Valley Memorial Hospital spokesman said. The spokesman said the girl died of a cerebral hemorrhage Tuesday [Aug 7]. She underwent surgery shortly after her admission to the hospital, but did not regain consciousness, the spokesman said….The girl was the only persons who died as a result of the storm, which produced grapefruit-size hail, and caused up to $20 million worth of property damage.” (AP. “Hail Storm Injuries Claim Life of Infant.” Gazette Telegraph, Colorado Springs, CO, 8-8-1979, 4A.)
